If a good countryside walk is your idea of a morning well spent, Canons Ashby has something worth putting in the diary this September.
On Thursday 17th September 2026, the National Trust is hosting a guided six-mile walk through the countryside surrounding Canons Ashby, giving walkers the chance to explore the local landscape with experienced volunteer guides.
The walk runs from 10am to 12.30pm, although the finishing time can vary slightly depending on the pace of the group.
It is free to join and no advance booking is needed.

The walk takes you beyond the house and gardens and into the wider countryside surrounding Canons Ashby.
The route covers around six miles, with volunteer walking guides leading the way through a mix of fields, paths and rural landscapes.
It is a good opportunity to see another side of Canons Ashby and enjoy views across the local countryside that you might otherwise miss.

What is the walk like?
This is very much a proper countryside walk rather than a gentle stroll around the gardens.
The route includes:
Uneven ground
Slopes and inclines
Stiles
Fields and mixed countryside terrain
Areas that may be muddy
The National Trust recommends wearing sturdy walking footwear and dressing for the weather.
It is also sensible to bring water and anything else you might normally take on a longer countryside walk.
Can children join?
The walk is aimed mainly at adults, although children aged 11 and over can take part when accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The terrain and distance mean it is not considered suitable for younger children.
Can you bring a dog?
Dogs are not suitable for this particular walk because of the stiles, livestock and route conditions.
Assistance dogs may be able to join, although owners need to be confident they can safely manage them over the stiles and around cattle or sheep.
Parking at Canons Ashby
Parking is complimentary for people joining the walk for the duration of the event.
If you decide to stay afterwards and visit Canons Ashby itself, normal National Trust admission and parking arrangements apply.
That means National Trust members will need to show their membership card, while non-members will need to pay the usual property admission if they want to continue exploring after the walk.
