Living in Weedon

Weedon Bec was named as the overall winner of the 2015 Northamptonshire Best Village Competition. The annual awards celebrate community spirit and quality of life in Northamptonshires villages.

As well as being named overall winner Weedon Bec was also named best large village with judges commending it for its “welcoming and vibrant community.”

Weedon Bec, usually called just “Weedon” when including Lower and Upper Weedon were once distinct villages now merged into one. The “Bec” part of the name is derived from the Abbey of Bec Hellouin in France which owned most of the village until King Henry VIII dissolved Monasteries and gave it to Eton College!

The Grand Union Canal and West Coast Main Line both pass through the village.

You will notice lots of Military road names – such as Equestrian Way, Cavalry Fields and Fusilier Way.

Weedon was home to an army barracks, holding a standing battalion, plus a troop of cavalry and a troop of horse artillery. The horse tethers are still in situ.

The Military Ordnance Depot, built in 1805 still stands as a prominent feature in the village – the depot consisted of eight large storehouses built either side of the central canal and high stone wall. This is now a Grade II listed building.

Weedon itself is very nicely situated in the middle of England and is a friendly community with lots of amenities; pubs, shops, doctors, pharmacy and hairdressers to name but a few.

The local primary school is highly regarded and offers a pleasant environment for children to learn.

The main road networks are close at hand which makes commuting to anywhere very easy – A5, A45, M1, M45, M6. Long Buckby railway station is only a short car journey away, too.
